Bhairavnath Temple

The Bhairavnath Temple stands directly opposite the Nyatapola Temple at Taumadhi Square and is dedicated to Bhairav — the fierce and protective form of Lord Shiva who is considered the guardian deity of Bhaktapur. Originally a single-storey structure, the temple was enlarged over the centuries to its current three-storey pagoda form, and its interior contains a remarkable image of Bhairav kept largely hidden from public view. The temple comes to life during the annual Bisket Jatra festival, when it becomes the focal point of elaborate processions and community celebrations.
